October 2026

A message from your superintendent

Hello hello Bremerton School Community,

November is a great time to pause and think about the people who make our community stronger. At Bremerton School District, we have so many community partners who show up for our kids, families, and staff in ways both big and small. During this month of gratitude, I’d like to spotlight just a few.

The BHS Class of 1979 recently donated $1,200 each to Naval Avenue, Armin Jahr, and View Ridge, supporting students and schools in our community. These funds go to support activities like field trips and purchasing recess equipment. The Bremerton Backpack Brigade at Naval Avenue Elementary, led by community volunteers, is packing 750 backpacks of food each week to help support 312 families in our District. And the Bremerton Schools and Alumni Foundation has awarded $19,000 in school-based grants to educators, helping bring their ideas to life in classrooms across our district.

These are just three examples of the generosity and commitment that make Bremerton such a special place to learn and live. Whether it’s an alum giving back to their school, a volunteer making sure families have food on the table, or a community partner investing in an educator’s idea, these efforts make a real difference for our students. I am so grateful for the many people and organizations who believe in our kids and continue to invest in their futures. We’ll keep sharing more of these stories throughout the year, because there are plenty of them worth celebrating. To everyone who gives their time, resources, and energy to support our students and families, thank you. We appreciate you more than you know.

With gratitude,

Dr. Slade McSheehy

Superintendent

🏆 Armin Jahr Elementary is a Washington School on the Rise! 🏆

Armin Jahr (AJ) Elementary was selected as a 2026 Washington Schools on the Rise Award recipient by the Association of Washington Student Leaders (AWSL) and the Association of Washington School Principals (AWSP)!

This honor recognizes schools where students, staff, and families lead together to build an outstanding school culture, elevate student voice, and foster meaningful leadership. From AJ's Student Leaders program and Dual Language learning to inclusive practices and a revitalized PTO, this recognition reflects the heart and dedication of our entire school community.

A huge shoutout to our students, staff, and families whose hard work made this possible—leading to higher attendance, stronger family engagement, and a true sense of belonging for every child!

Armin Jahr joins Mountain View Middle School and West Hills STEM Academy, who were both honored with this prestigious award last year! Bremerton School District is on the rise!

The photos below are from the presentation of the award banner at a recent Armin Jahr weekly assembly.

BHS Science Teacher receives Keta Legacy Foundation’s 2026 Chico Champion Award

Bremerton High School AP Environmental Science teacher Briana Faxon has received the Keta Legacy Foundation’s 2026 Chico Champion Award!

The annual award recognizes Ms. Faxon’s outstanding dedication to hands-on, project-based environmental education. For several years, she has utilized the nearby Rhododendron Preserve as an outdoor classroom, giving students real-world experience in land- and water-based sciences. Her students have taken on impactful stewardship projects—ranging from constructing bat boxes to drafting formal Environmental Impact Statements for preserve infrastructure.

"Briana's use of the Preserve as an outdoor classroom and living laboratory is truly impressive," said KLF President Katha Miller-Winder. "The work her students have done to enhance the habitat embodies our foundation’s mission to protect and preserve the Salish Sea region."

Mrs. Faxon, who has taught in the Bremerton School District for 19 years, designed the program to give students accessible, local access to field research without relying on heavy transportation budgets. By connecting students directly with environmental professionals on the Preserve, her classes help spark curiosity about future careers in natural resources.

Congratulations to Mrs. Faxon on this well-deserved recognition, and thank you for inspiring the next generation of conservationists in B-Town!
